Η αλήθεια είναι πως με τα σκάφη που έχουν παραγγείλει οι Αμερικανοί, τα Littoral Combat Ships δεν… ξέρουν και πολύ τι να κάνουν. Τώρα έχουν μια ιδέα: να φέρουν ρομποαεροσκάφη.
Το πρώτο που θα δοκιμαστεί είναι το Fort Worth, ή αλλιώς LCS 3. Σε αυτό θα δοκιμαστεί κάτι που ονομάζεται surface warfare mission-equipment package – μια συλλογή από τεχνολογίες όπως ένα 11μετρο φουσκωτό rigid inflatable boat, 30mm πολυβόλα, MH-60R ελικόπτερα και το MQ-8B Fire Scout, ένα ρομποτικό κάθετης απογείωσης drone.
“This first time we’re bringing Fire Scout into the equation and matching it up with a manned helicopter squadron. The same pilots that fly an MH-60 helicopter can fly a mission, land on deck, come inside the ship and launch the Fire Scout and do another mission. It brings us a lot more flexibility,” λέει για το σύστημα ο πλοίαρχος Ken Bridgewater, διοικητής του USS Fort Worth.
Με εμβέλεια 100 μίλια το Fire Scout UAS έχει electro-optical/υπέρυθρους αισθητήρες για live video stream πίσω στο πλοίο: “The Fire Scout has a lot longer endurance so you can keep it up in the air a lot longer than we can keep a traditional manned MH-60. It gives us more loitering time on station to help build that maritime picture.”
Αυτό το surface warfare package θα χρησιμοποιεί το κατάστρωμα του USS Fort Worth που θα δοκιμαστεί σε μια πολυεθνική άσκηση, τη Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training, ή CARAT. Το USS Freedom θα έχει πολλές βελτιώσεις: “We’ve taken advantage of Freedom’s deployment and Freedom’s operations. We’ve incorporated lessons learned from that hull into this hull. There are over 400 improvements that have been made for Fort Worth just like the USS Milwaukee, LCS 5, has receive improvements from this design,” λέει ο κος Garner.
Τα 387 ποδών LCS είναι σχεδιασμένα να φτάνουν 40 κόμβους με 54 ναύτες.
